Swatches/Samples:  Although fabric swatch samples for linens are available for a 3-day loan from the retail shop (not online), the fee is refunded upon your linen purchase.  If the swatch is not returned to the store within 3 days you are charged the full price of the swatch which varies based on the fabric you have taken out of the store.   You are still refunded the cost of the swatch upon purchase (it is applied toward your purchase).  Fabrics are not free (even to retail stores that have them) - we are charged by the manufacturer of the fabric and it is important to have them in the store for all customers to touch feel/compare and contrast while at the store.  We encourage you to take pictures of swatches/samples at the store or bring in to the store whatever you are trying to match up.  That way everyone has an opportunity to see and feel the swatches when they come in and it doesn't hurt our small family business to be without them.  If you are not local or able to get to our store - simply purchase a small pillowcase or washcloth if you'd like to make a comparison at home.  You can return the item for a full refund if it doesn't work as per our 30 day return policy.

Sales Tax
Orders placed online that are to ship within California will be charged the appropriate sales tax for Berkeley, CA as we only have brick-n-mortar (over-the-counter) locations in Berkeley, CA and all web orders are processed and fulfilled at those physical (Berkeley, CA) locations prior to shipping.   We are a small family-owned retail store in Berkeley, CA and only have one store and one warehouse in Berkeley, CA sharing the over-the-counter physical location inventory for everything sold at earthsake.com.  In that sense, we are not a traditional online e-commerce website and do not physically charge your card online at the time of order - instead - the order is received in Berkeley, CA and then processed "manually" at the physical (over-the counter) store or warehouse in Berkeley, CA (with appropriate sales tax).  Our physical store/warehouse registers are programmed as such (by law) to charge the correct Berkeley, CA sales tax on each sale and can not be changed or reprogrammed. (MOTO).  Phone, fax and mail orders shipped within California must also apply this same appropriate state/local sales tax for Berkeley, CA.  We are a Berkeley, CA (and only Berkeley, CA) retail shop. 

Only orders that are taken online and shipping outside the State of California qualify for "Interstate Commerce" sales that do not require sales tax.  This, thankfully, is to help small local businesses like ours to compete with the likes of Amazon and large corporate retailers with multiple locations and shipping warehouses throughout the United States.   So if you are ordering from outside the State of California to ship outside the State of California, you can save up to 10.25% by choosing a small mom-n-pop retail store like earthsake over other online retailers.

We understand these issues are still being battled in the courts (mainly due to Amazon and others gaming the sales tax systems) but we are truly a small family-owned (Mom-n-Pop) brick-n-mortar physical retail store the system is meant to protect and we have been audited by sales tax authorities to ensure compliance and understanding even as the large corporate retailers continue to game the system (and in fact use the system itself to get sales tax authorities to go after small businesses in order to gain even more competitive advantage than they already have).
